Benefits of Using Asphalt

Asphalt is a durable material recommended for use on roadways, sidewalks, parking lots, driveways and other areas that see substantial traffic. Its benefits include:

  • Recyclable: Asphalt is 100% recyclable, and the vast majority of reclaimed asphalt is reused and put back into new or rebuilt roads.
  • Safe: The dark, heat-absorbent color of asphalt reduces glare and melts snow and ice faster than other surfaces. Asphalt also offers high skid resistance, making it safer for people to walk or drive on.
  • Low-maintenance: Asphalt is a mixture of a tar-like binder and aggregates such as rocks, sand and stones, so it can withstand heavy use for long periods of time. It is also somewhat flexible and can endure occasional overloads without suffering serious damage. It needs only periodic maintenance to remain in good condition indefinitely.
  • Cost-effective: Asphalt provides a uniform, smooth surface for traffic, resulting in fewer costs attributed to vehicle wear and tear due to bumps in the road. Increasing a road’s smoothness also extends the pavement’s life span, which translates to monetary savings for property owners.

When Should You Start Laying Asphalt?

Laying asphalt is a process that must be started in the planning stage. You will likely first need approval from city or county planning offices. Once the plan is approved, the process moves forward into the preparation stage, in which the land is cleared and flattened to create a solid surface for the pavement.

The next step is to lay the sub-base, which prevents shifting and provides a solid foundation to stand up against erosion, weather and usage. After this step, the asphalt is poured and leveled while hot — it will harden as the surface cools.

Vehicles should remain off of freshly poured asphalt for at least 24 hours.
